General Assistance Notice
The Select Board is designated as the Overseers of the Poor. Select Board members who have completed General Assistance (GA) training may act in the capacity of a program administrator. Additionally, the Board appoints administrators of the GA program to support eligible people in need.
Pursuant to Title 22 MRSA § 4305, the municipal officers have adopted an ordinance establishing that program. A copy of this ordinance is available for public inspection at the Pittston Town Office or in the Documents page. Also available for inspection is a copy of the State’s GA statutes as copies of State law are made available to the municipality by Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services. To obtain a copy of the GA Application Form, click here. There are several options to apply for General Assistance:
- In-person (walk in)-applications made be obtained or turned in at the Town Office during normal hours. A GA representative will contact you in order to process the application. This may require a future in-person or phone meeting.
- In-person (appointment)-call ahead at 207-582-4438 to schedule with a meeting with a GA representative.

The municipality’s GA administrators must issue a written decision within 24 hours of receiving a completed application and all required supporting information/documents.
